Three Of The Most Common Misconceptions About Bedbugs

Posted on

The rash of bedbug instances across the country has led people to be on their toes when it comes to traveling. The idea of something gnawing away at you while you sleep is enough to give anyone the willies and it is easy to see why paranoia has led to many misconceptions about bedbugs. Here are a few of the most common and the facts to debunk them.

Misconception: If you stay at an upscale hotel, bedbugs are not something to worry about.

Fact: Bedbugs do not discriminate when it comes to where they take up residence. They do not care of your home is the cleanest on the block or if the hotel they stop in at is a five-star, luxury resort. According to the Centers for Disease Control, bedbugs have been found at upscale, five-star facilities just the same as anywhere else. Therefore, you should make yourself aware of signs, such as markings on the mattress or small insect carcasses in the folds of a mattress, of an infestation no matter where you plan to stay while you travel.

Misconception: You cannot get bedbugs if you never travel or stay in a hotel.

Fact: It is true that there are a lot of cases of bedbugs in hotels and motels across the country than what you will hear about in private residences.  If you never travel, it is still a possibility to find bedbugs in your home. They can be carried in from visitors on their clothing, inadvertently purchased on a used mattress, and will gladly hitch a ride on borrowed bedding if they get the chance. Therefore, even if you never step foot in a hotel room, it is not completely unheard of to find that you have a bedbug issue.

Misconception: Vacuuming your mattress will get rid of bedbugs.

Fact: Some of the bedbugs can be removed when you vacuum your mattress thoroughly, it is true. However, vacuuming alone will not be enough to eliminate an infestation completely. The bugs can bury their way inside of the mattress where a vacuum will do nothing to phase them. Furthermore, once the vacuum is turned off, the bugs can simply make their way back out onto carpet and bedding.

When it comes down to it, bedbugs are an issue no matter where you live, how much you travel, or if you have a clean home. Getting rid of bedbugs is a task that proves to be one of the most difficult pest control issues because of the fact that these little biters are not as easily deterred by typical chemicals and methods. To prevent the problem from growing, it is a good idea to contact a professional exterminator who has the expertise and experience to help.
