Want To Sell Your House? Clean Out The Closets To Help

Posted on

If you're getting ready to sell your home, you want it to look as great as possible before you show it to potential buyers. You do whatever you can to keep the place clean, but you might end up forgetting the closets. Storing many of the items you currently have in your closet in a storage facility can help make your closets look bigger, attracting more buyers. This guide explains the steps to clear your closets and store your excess belongings in a storage facility.

Step 1: Find a Storage Rental Facility

Visit your local storage rental office and ask to view some of their units. Choose one that's big enough to house all your extra items temporarily, but not so big that you end up paying for space you don't need.

Discuss your situation with the storage professional, and let them know that you only need the unit for a short time. Remember, you aren't looking for long-term storage, so a contract of a few months is sufficient.

Step 2: Gather Your Supplies

Go to the home improvement store and pick up some supplies to help you clear out your closets. Some ideas include:

  • clear plastic containers with airtight lids
  • label maker and labels

Step 3: Clear It All Out

Look through your closets and, depending on which season it is, remove the clothes that you don't expect to use within the next few months. Place them in a container and use the label maker to mark what types of clothes they are. Place the label on the outside of the container. Other items that might be in your closet that you should consider storing during the sale of your home include:

  • old computer components and electronics
  • photo albums
  • unused handbags and shoes
  • stacks of paperwork
  • toys

Place all of these items in containers and label them accordingly.

Considerations

Be sure to go through each closet in your home and store anything that you won't need over the next few months. Be honest with yourself about what you can live without for a while.

When potential buyers come to view your home, make it a point to show them the closet space. Some buyers are reluctant to open other people's closets, so showing them how much space there really is can help them envision what the closet will look like with their belongings in it.

Set aside a day or two to move as much as you can out of your closets and to transport them to a storage facility like Foothills Storage
